Our passion for finding the best non-alcoholic beer in Australia means you get to save time, effort and money from chugging every alcohol free beer in the market to find one that’s right for you. Top of our tedious, thirst quenching research lands us on Sobah, a non-alcoholic beer brand with a range of five non-alcoholic beers. We’d love you to meet the folk behind Aussie’s non-alcoholic beer — husband and wife team, Clinton and Lozen Schultz.

Sobah is one of the first brands to make a non-alcoholic craft beer in Australia and is a proud Aboriginal business based on beautiful Kombumerri country, also known as Gold Coast, Queensland. Apart from being ridiculously delicious, the Sobah story is also one that’s great to share at your next Sunday barbie.

The Sobah story

The Sobah beer story starts back in 2016 when Clinton started tinkering with homebrewing to make a truly great-tasting non-alcoholic beer. Mind you, this passion project was long before COVID. Back then, the only non-alcoholic beer in the shops were imports from Europe. Clinton, being the true blue legend he is, made it his mission to change the non-alcoholic beer game in Australia. And change the game he did.

Clinton wasn’t playing around. When he wanted to find out how to make a great non-alcoholic craft beer, he pulled out all the research stops. His findings led him to an innovative brewing technique that uses a special type of yeast that doesn’t produce alcohol when it ferments. Starting with his OG Lemon Aspen Pilsner, Clinton worked on the recipe until it was perfect.

The next step in the Sobah journey was to find a microbrewery that would give Clinton’s recipes a red hot go and shortly after, the first Sobah alcohol-free beer was ready for public sale from Clinton’s food truck. Both Lemon Aspen Pilsner and Finger Lime Cerveza received smashing customer reviews and developed a bit of a cult following, and by December 2017, Sobah Beer was ready to go mainstream.

Out of all the Australian non-alcoholic beer, Sobah is one of our top picks. But it’s taken Clinton and Loz a lot of hard yakka to get there and they’ve had to take some big risks. Like jumping from batches of 600 to 1000 litres to batches of 200 hectoliters, which is a massive 20,000 litres. Clinton tells us that it was one of those ‘go big or go home,’ moments — and big they certainly went.

Yeah, there have been a few hurdles to jump over such as fires, floods and the pandemic, to name a few. But on the whole, Sobah beer has gone from strength to strength. Clinton and Loz reckon one of the best things about Sobah’s success is the difference it makes with customers telling them Sobah non-alcoholic beer has given them the freedom to cut down on alcohol.

Sobah also supports a big range of organisations that raise positive awareness and promote First Nations' culture, arts, language, and history. Talk about a non-alcoholic beer brand that’s not just good for you, but also good for the community.

So, what’s next for Sobah? Clinton reckons it’s all about export, and since Sobah is probably the most Aussie non-alcoholic beer you can get, we reckon it’s going to be an international pleaser. And speaking of popularity, Clint and Loz are also planning on opening their own brewery, fronted with a native foods cafe. Call us obsessed but we’ll be the first ones through the doors when they open in 2023!
